Last week I was on vacation with my family in Madeira Beach, Florida. On Saturday night we headed to John’s Pass Village, a local hotspot of gift shops and restaurants. We decided to eat at a restaurant perfectly located on the pier and packed with families, singles, locals and tourists. The beer was cold, the food was good and the vibe was great, thanks in part to the classic 80s tunes blaring from the speakers, everything from Madonna to Bon Jovi. It was a fun place to be and everyone seemed to be having a good time.<\/p>\n

When we sat down at our table, the mood soon changed. You see, the catchy and fun tune “Tenderness” by General Public<\/a> was playing but then it was followed by…(hold your breath)… the slow and dreary “She Believes in Me” by Kenny Rogers<\/a>!…Not that there is anything wrong with Kenny Rogers, but because it was an 80s song, it was placed on that channel. All the toe-tapping, whistling, swaying and singing from the staff and patrons suddenly stopped…I’m not sure that they even realized that they stopped, but I did. Halfway through the Kenny Rogers song I noticed the bartender frantically looking for the channel changer to change to another station.<\/p>\n

Many businesses are changing the channel these days. Years ago when the satellite music businesses started offering 100 different music channels, business owners jumped on board because they no longer had to play CDs and there was a lot of different music to choose from. However, today we are seeing more and more businesses abandoning those services because the music is too niched, it’s very repetitive and they usually listen to only 2 or 3 channels out of the 100 that they are paying for.
